Wichita Falls & Lawton, TX, October 2, 2026 — The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is set to implement significant structural changes ahead of its fourth season, aiming to enhance competition and expand postseason opportunities. The league announced a major overhaul that will divide its teams into two distinct six-team conferences. This realignment is expected to foster new rivalries and provide a more focused competitive landscape within each conference.

Alongside the conference restructuring, the PWHL is also expanding its playoff format. This expansion includes the addition of a quarterfinal round, which will allow more teams to compete for the championship title. Previously, a smaller number of teams advanced directly to semifinal matchups.

The new conference alignment will create two divisions, each comprising six teams. This structure will likely lead to a more concentrated schedule of games between divisional opponents throughout the regular season. The exact composition of these conferences and the scheduling implications were not detailed in the announcement.

The expansion of the playoffs to include a quarterfinal round signifies a commitment to increasing postseason participation. This development offers more teams a chance to contend for the league championship, potentially increasing engagement and interest in the latter part of the season. Further details regarding the playoff structure, including seeding and series formats, are anticipated to be released by the league at a later date.

The PWHL continues to evolve as it prepares for its upcoming seasons, with these strategic changes designed to build upon the league’s growth and appeal.
