Years of member commitment strengthen credentials that connect lightning protection standards with professional practice.
LIBERTYVILLE, IL, UNITED STATES, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) has been accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to ISO/IEC 17024 for its Journeyman Installer, Master Installer, and Master Installer Designer certifications. The accreditation follows a multiyear effort by LPI members to strengthen the examinations and procedures behind the certification program.
“This is a proud moment to be a part of LPI,” said Tim Harger, Executive Director of the Lightning Protection Institute. “Our members devoted years of work to this effort, contributing their expertise, learning new processes, and strengthening the examinations behind our certifications. Their commitment made this accreditation possible. It reflects what we can accomplish together and our shared responsibility to advance professional standards in lightning protection.”
CREDENTIALS BUILT ON EXPERIENCE AND DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE
LPI certifications pair documented work experience with examinations that assess knowledge of lightning protection standards and how to apply them.
Journeyman Installer candidates must hold an OSHA 10 certificate and verified lightning protection work experience: 1,000 hours with a high school diploma or GED, or 2,000 hours without one. Master Installer candidates must hold Journeyman Installer certification and an additional 2,000 hours of verified lightning protection work experience beyond the Journeyman requirements. Master Installer/Designer candidates must hold Master Installer certification and an additional 2,000 hours of verified lightning protection work experience beyond the Master Installer requirements.
Candidates must also pass the applicable certification examination, which assesses knowledge of NFPA 780 and LPI 175 standards, including material requirements, design parameters, and the application of standards to design drawings. Certified professionals maintain their credentials by taking a re-certification exam every 5 years.
CONNECTING SCIENCE, STANDARDS, AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
LPI supports the advancement of lightning protection systems backed by scientific principles and established standards, including NFPA 780, LPI 175, UL 96A, and IEC 62305.
ANAB accreditation adds independent evaluation of LPI’s competence, impartiality, and consistent operation as a certification body. It gives employers, specifiers, building owners, and industry partners an additional basis for confidence in the certification process.
For those selecting lightning protection professionals, LPI encourages specifying and verifying current LPI credentials appropriate to the work. Choosing professionals who hold certifications within LPI’s ANAB-accredited scope supports an approach grounded in documented experience, demonstrated knowledge, and recognized standards.
