SMART TS XL MCP Server lets AI assistants search, trace and explain billions of lines of enterprise code. Watch live launch sessions: October 29 and November 2.
AUSTINE, TX, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — New integration helps organizations investigate legacy applications, discover business rules and assess modernization risks using natural-language questions.
IN-COM Data Systems announced the SMART TS XL MCP Server, an integration designed to connect compatible AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Grok, with the enterprise application intelligence available through SMART TS XL.
The integration uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard for connecting AI applications with external tools and data sources. Instead of asking an AI assistant to speculate about proprietary code it has never seen, enterprise teams can use MCP to request information from SMART TS XL’s indexed application assets.
For organizations maintaining decades of COBOL, PL/I, Natural and other business-critical software, that distinction matters. A seemingly small change can affect programs, data fields, databases, batch jobs and downstream applications. Understanding those relationships often requires extensive manual investigation and the expertise of developers who have supported the systems for years.
“Enterprise AI becomes far more useful when it can work with the actual systems that run the business,” said Shlomo Friman, CEO of IN-COM Data Systems. “Our goal is to connect familiar AI assistants with the code, dependencies and technical knowledge already available in SMART TS XL, so teams can ask better questions and make better-informed decisions.”
From Natural-Language Questions to Technical Evidence
The SMART TS XL MCP Server provides a bridge between conversational AI and SMART TS XL’s established discovery capabilities. Depending on the connected assistant and configured tools, users can investigate application relationships, locate code references and explore technical findings through natural-language requests.
Potential use cases include:
Change impact analysis: Identify programs, files and data elements that reference a field or component before modifying it.
Business-rule discovery: Investigate calculations, validation logic, exceptions and processing rules embedded in legacy applications.
Modernization planning: Examine dependencies and interfaces before migrating, replacing or refactoring applications.
Troubleshooting: Find error messages, related routines and connected processing paths to narrow an investigation.
Knowledge transfer: Help newer developers understand how unfamiliar applications process transactions and exchange information.
For example, a developer might ask which applications reference a particular customer field and what downstream components could be affected by a proposed change. SMART TS XL can supply relevant indexed findings for the assistant to explain, while the technical team reviews the underlying evidence.
The approach is intended to support, not replace, engineering judgment. Results should be validated before production changes, particularly in regulated or mission-critical environments.
Enterprise Visibility Beyond the Mainframe
SMART TS XL supports application discovery across mainframe and non-mainframe environments, including IBM i/AS400, UNIX and distributed systems. Its capabilities include source-code search, cross-reference analysis, COBOL field tracking, dependency investigation, control-flow visualization, complexity analysis and technical documentation discovery.
The platform can also bring relevant application documentation and database information into investigations. This broader view is important because business processes rarely remain inside a single program or technology stack.
According to IN-COM’s current operational figures, SMART TS XL indexes more than 5.7 billion lines of code and supports more than 3.8 million searches annually. These figures illustrate the scale of application intelligence that organizations can make more accessible through AI-assisted workflows.
Preserving Institutional Knowledge
Many organizations face growing pressure to maintain aging applications while experienced specialists retire or move to other roles. Critical knowledge about business rules, historical design decisions and application dependencies may be poorly documented.
IN-COM says it has filed a patent application related to a self-improving approach to MCP-enabled enterprise intelligence. The concept is intended to incorporate validated corrections and insights from subject-matter experts so that future investigations can benefit from accumulated organizational knowledge.
The company views this as a potential way to reduce repeated research, improve documentation and preserve expertise that would otherwise be difficult to recover.
Supporting Modernization Without Unnecessary Disruption
Large enterprises are pursuing AI adoption and application modernization while continuing to rely on systems that process essential financial, operational and customer transactions.
IN-COM says SMART TS XL has helped customers reduce time spent researching application changes and identifying dependencies. The MCP Server is designed to extend access to that intelligence through the conversational interfaces teams increasingly use.
The integration does not, by itself, guarantee savings or eliminate the need for testing and review. Its value lies in helping teams find relevant technical information more quickly, understand possible impacts and plan changes with greater confidence.
Live Demonstrations
IN-COM will host two free online demonstrations of the SMART TS XL MCP Server. The sessions will show how AI-assisted questions can support code discovery, dependency analysis, business-rule investigation and modernization planning.
