Estrella Insurance agents help families offset a new driver’s premium with discounts and coverage from more than 100 carriers
MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES, October 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for U.S. teenagers, and in 2024, 2,320 people were killed in crashes involving drivers ages 15 to 18, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 18-24, Estrella Insurance is encouraging families to pair conversations about safe driving with a plan for covering their new driver.
Fatal crashes are only part of the picture, since new drivers are more likely to have minor accidents, the kind of scrape or dent that happens while parking, backing up, or misjudging a turn. Counting all police-reported crashes, from fender benders to serious collisions, drivers ages 16 to 19 crash at nearly four times the rate of drivers 20 and older, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Highway Loss Data Institute has found that about half of collision claims from young drivers involve less than $3,000 in damage. Insurers factor that risk into pricing, so adding a 16-year-old to a family policy can raise the premium by as much as 150%, according to Estrella agents. The exact amount depends on the vehicle the teen drives, where the family lives, and the deductibles and coverage limits the family selects.
“Making sure a teen has the right insurance is part of preparing them to drive, and the best time for that conversation is before they get their license,” said Richard Estrella, vice president of Estrella Insurance. “Adding a new driver will raise a family’s premium, and our agents help parents understand what’s driving that increase, choose coverage that fits the teen’s situation and find the discounts that bring the cost back into balance.”
Handing a teenager the car keys for the first time is a milestone most parents plan for carefully, and NHTSA’s teen driving guidance encourages families to agree on ground rules for speed, phone use, seat belts and passengers before a teen drives alone. The conversation about coverage deserves the same early start, but it often happens after the teen gets their driver’s license. Requirements vary by state and carrier, with some policies covering a teen with a learner’s permit automatically and others requiring parents to list the teen once the teen receives a permit, so calling an agent at the permit stage gives families time to compare their options.
Those options give families room to bring the cost down. Because Estrella agents compare coverage from more than 100 carriers, they can match a household adding a new driver with the carrier and policy structure that fit its budget, along with discounts that are easy to overlook. Many carriers reward teens who maintain good grades or complete a driver’s education course, and some offer lower rates to new drivers who use a safe-driving app that monitors their driving habits. Good-student discounts alone can reach 25% with some carriers, and families who qualify for more than one discount can save more. The programs also give teens a practical reason to keep building safe habits long after National Teen Driver Safety Week ends.
