MONTGOMERY, Ala., Oct. 27, 2026
Construction scheduled to begin in November with opening planned for spring 2028
MONTGOMERY, Ala., Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — U.S. Orthopaedic Partners (USOP) and Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOS) broke ground October 22 on a new ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in Montgomery, expanding access to specialized outpatient orthopedic care across Alabama’s River Region. Construction is scheduled to begin in November, with the center expected to open in spring 2028.
The groundbreaking follows an October 9 ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court clearing the way for the project to proceed.
“Partnering with USOP provided SOS with the experienced leadership necessary to navigate the complicated process of attaining the Certificate of Need,” said Stephen Samelson, MD, an SOS orthopedic surgeon and chair of USOP’s board of directors. “Without USOP, SOS would not have had the expertise, resources, and proficiency required to succeed in the current healthcare environment. Now, along with USOP, SOS can bring our world-class orthopedic care model to our patients and our community in Central Alabama.”
Expanding Surgical Care in Central Alabama
Serving Central Alabama since 1996, SOS is developing the center to give patients greater access to outpatient total joint replacements and other orthopedic procedures. The facility will feature four fully equipped operating rooms, with space for two additional ORs, two specialized procedure rooms, and robotic-assisted technology for joint replacement procedures.
Designed specifically for orthopedic surgery, the center will bring surgical care into a setting focused on patient comfort, convenience, and efficient care. It will also give SOS physicians additional capacity to serve the River Region and support the practice’s continued growth.
“USOP was built to give leading orthopedic practices the resources and support to shape their future,” said Graham Young, Co-CEO of USOP. “Our ASC strategy is central to that vision. We are helping physicians expand access to high-quality, cost-effective surgical care while building lasting value in their practices. The performance of our existing centers and the progress of these new facilities clearly show that strategy taking shape.”
Building on ASC Performance and Expanding Capacity
Montgomery’s groundbreaking comes as USOP advances additional surgery center projects across the Southeast. The new Mid State Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center ASC in Alexandria, La., is expected to open in November 2026, and the SportsMED ASC in Huntsville, Ala., is expected to break ground later this year. These milestones advance USOP’s strategy of helping its practices develop and operate surgery centers that expand patient access and support long-term growth.
The new projects build on the performance of USOP-affiliated surgery centers. Earlier this year, Bienville Surgery Center, located along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and North Mississippi Surgery Center in Tupelo, where Mississippi Sports Medicine – Tupelo surgeons perform procedures, were again named among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers for Orthopedics & Spine.
USOP has also strengthened the support behind that growth with the appointment of Dean Brown, MBA, CASC, CMPE, as Regional Director of ASC Operations. Brown brings more than two decades of ASC leadership experience and is supporting performance improvement at existing centers while helping guide new development, including Mid State’s opening.
“Our physicians have a lot invested in their practices, and they deserve a partner who is just as committed to their future,” said Allen Anderson, Co-CEO of USOP. “We stayed with SOS through a demanding process, and now we get to help bring this center to life. With Alexandria preparing to open and experienced ASC leaders working alongside our practices, there is a lot to be excited about. We are delivering on what we set out to do, and we intend to keep that momentum going.”
